Changing Communities: MIAMI Realtors Helps Create Pinecrest Gardens’ New Sensory Garden for Self-Guided Nature Play

MIAMI — The MIAMI Realtors hosted an Autism Awareness Picnic at Pinecrest Gardens’ new sensory garden on March 30, 2019. MIAMI helped the Village of Pinecrest Gardens to build the garden.

Families celebrated the new engaging space. We honored autism awareness with a picnic, complete with a bounce house, food, art and activities.

Located near the Playground and Petting Zoo, the Learning Garden is a dynamic outdoor classroom serving the purpose of teaching, inspiring, and facilitating discovery in nature. This sensory friendly area is fully accessible to those of all ability and provides a welcoming space for community engagement and learning.

This new addition is a hub for Pinecrest Gardens educational programs, frequented by our field trips, workshops, and scheduled or drop in programs. The Learning and Sensory Garden also encourages discovery through self-guided nature play by providing a safe and engaging experience for visitors of all ages. Spend time engaging the senses with delicious edible plants, herbs, and tactile plants; observe butterflies dancing among the pollinator friendly plantings; take some time to reflect on the beauty of nature, or join us for one of our drop-in garden programs—the Learning Garden has something for everyone. Every day is a new adventure.

Learning and sensory garden features:

Hand pump and children’s watering cans
Raised beds with seasonal vegetables and herbs
Investigation Station
Drop in programming and activities
Sensory engaging plants
Chalk, games, self-guided fun
Pollinator friendly plantings
Nature play

Located by the playground and petting zoo, enter through the butterfly house.

Miami Realtors Changing Communities Initiative

In 2018, MIAMI Realtors invested more than $175,000 in grant funds from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) to improve our South Florida communities.

Through member engagement and feedback, MIAMI developed a list of local community projects that could have the most impact. MIAMI invited its 46,000-plus membership for a brainstorming session and more than 200 members contributed ideas and volunteered to help.

In 2018, MIAMI led more than 18 local community initiatives, including a dinner for the homeless at Chapman Partnership in Miami, partnering to install a Jupiter dog park, creating a shaded Doral trolley stop and more. Each project was led by the Realtor who proposed it and supported by a team of fellow Realtor volunteers and a Realtor partner (usually an elected official).

More MIAMI Realtors Changing Communities initiatives are planned for 2019.
